Homeless Connect 2010

August 13, 2009 - Leave a Response

Newlife Care attended the annual Homeless Connect for the second time in as many years.  This event coincided with the week of the homeless, and is a day of information, give-aways and activities.  There were over 60 different agencies / services represented on the day.  In the opening ceremony the Mayor said that the Gold Coast officially had over 2,800 homeless persons, although actual figures could be well above this level.

The guests were welcomed by a large group of volunteers, given a goodie-bag and started the day with a cooked breakfast.  On offer were showers, haircuts, massage, clothing and a continual supply of fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice, cakes, tea, coffee and water. The outdoor activities included soccer, tower of confidence, music, face painting and jumping castle. Lunch was also supplied with everything from steaks to herbed fish fillets and a good range of salads and veggies. The weather was perfect and there was a great sense of camaraderie and enjoyment on the day.

Homeless Connect was also a fabulous networking opportunity for the agency / service providers.  We met the people behind the organizations and gained a better understanding of what they had to offer, how we could work in conjunction and how we could better refer clients between our services.

Although a number of agencies provided food relief for clients, Newlife Care was the only organization represented that offered professional counselling services by donation. Several government and non government agencies indicated that they would be referring clients to us in the future.
